Meet Teka Brandley: w. daly Blonding Expert

We are lucky to have some serious talent on our team at w. daly, and Teka is one of them. She’s an artist at heart, which helps her color hair with extra passion and creativity. Her specialty is blonding— from beach blondes to rooty and lived-in looks, she does it all. We picked her brain to learn more about her love for color. Read on to learn more about Teka!

What made you want to be a colorist?

Color lets you be very creative and artistic. As an artist, I draw and paint and so color was really natural for me—I understood it. I like how you can change up an entire look with color and make people feel better.

What do you like about working at w. daly?

I’ve been at w. daly for about 3 years, and I love the clientele. We have a wide variety of clients, which means I’m always faced with new challenges—from fun colors to making someone super blonde. I also love my co-workers. I really enjoy working with them, and we all help each other out and work as a team.

What is your favorite thing about blonding?

It’s so cool to see guests who have been trying to get to a certain blonde but haven’t been able to. When I am able to give them the perfect blonde color, their face lights up. I know how that feels because I am a blonde!

What is your favorite thing about Aveda color?

Well the main thing about Aveda color is that everything is separate—I get to formulate every little detail exactly how I want. There’s no other color line like it. And, of course, it’s more natural so it’s better for your hair.

Do you have a memory of coloring a guest’s hair that stands out to you?

There was a high school student who was super upset with how her hair had turned out from a previous colorist. She had a special event coming up and I was able to get it super blonde and keep it healthy throughout the process. It’s just awesome when you turn them around in the chair and their face lights up and they give you a hug.

What tips do you give to people who want to keep their blonde vibrant?

Definitely use a color-safe shampoo, and don’t wash it every day if you can help it. For blondes, use a purple shampoo and conditioner like Aveda’s Blue Malva at least once or twice a week to keep the brassiness at bay.

What is your favorite Aveda product?

I have two—one is the dry shampoo. I use it every single day even after I just wash my hair to give it some roughness. It smells good and soaks up the oil. I also love Control Force hairspray.

What do you do when you’re not at the salon?

I like oil painting, drawing, and any kind of arts and crafts. I also love hanging out with friends and family, and traveling when I can, as much as I can. Every once in a while, I plan a little vacation to somewhere I’ve never been before.
